Simien Mountains Trek
Trekking the escarpment in Ethiopia's best-known national park.
- Region
- Simien Mountains
Overview
The Simien Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage site in the north, where the highlands break away in a long escarpment of cliffs and pinnacles. Trekking here means walking ridge lines at three to four thousand metres with a great deal of air on one side. Gelada, walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf all live in the park, though the wolf in particular is rarely seen.
Highlights
- Walking the escarpment ridge line
- Gelada, which live here in large groups
- High grassland and giant lobelia
- One of Ethiopia's most striking landscapes
Who it suits
A genuine trek rather than a walk. Long days on foot at high altitude, with cold nights. Previous hill-walking experience and a reasonable level of fitness both matter here.
Before you go
Park entry, scouts and guides are arranged through the park authority, and the requirements can change. We will confirm what applies when you enquire.
Common questions
- How long is the trek?
- We build the route around how many days you have and how far you want to walk. Tell us both when you enquire and we will put an itinerary together.
- Will I see wildlife?
- Gelada are commonly seen and often at close range. Walia ibex are possible on the cliffs. The Ethiopian wolf lives in the park but is genuinely rare, and we would rather you went expecting not to see one.
